Pancreatic cancer is an abnormal growth arising from cells within the pancreas, a gland that is located behind your stomach in the upper abdomen. The pancreas produces enzymes for digestion of food, as well as hormones, such as insulin which regulates blood sugar levels. Pancreatic cancer is the seventh leading cause of global cancer deaths in industrialized countries and the third most common in the USA.

What causes pancreatic cancer?

Research is ongoing into what causes pancreatic cancer, but it appears to be complex and involve many different factors. Factors have been identified that can increase the risk of developing pancreatic cancer.

Some factors, such as family history, genetics, race and age cannot be controlled. However, there are lifestyle changes that you can make to reduce other risk factors.

What can I do to decrease my risk?

Making the following changes can help to reduce your risk:

  • Avoid smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke. Smoking is the most important avoidable risk factor for pancreatic cancer.  If you smoke, talk to your doctor about strategies to help you stop.
  • Eat a healthy diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables. Swap white bread or rice for brown whole grains. Reduce your consumption of  fried food and red meats. Choose lean proteins such as chicken, fish, eggs, beans, nuts and soy products instead. Avoid highly processed food and sugary drinks.
  • Maintain a healthy weight and get regular exercise. Obesity has been linked to pancreatic cancer, as well as type 2 diabetes which can also increase the risk of pancreatic cancer. If you need to lose weight, aim for a slow, steady weight loss.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption. Heavy alcohol use has been linked to pancreatic cancer as well as chronic pancreatitis, which is known to increase pancreatic cancer risk.
  • If you have diabetes, follow your doctor’s advice controlling your blood sugar levels.

  Remember:

Although it is not possible to completely prevent pancreatic cancer, there are things you can do to reduce your risk. If you have a family history of pancreatic cancer, discuss with your doctor whether you would benefit from genetic counselling and screening. Early detection can improve treatment outcomes.
