Introduction to Hernia Surgery
A hernia is when a part of your internal organs protrudes through a weak spot or opening in the surrounding muscle or tissue. Typically, this involves one of your abdominal organs pushing through the abdominal wall. Hernias can develop gradually due to the natural wear and tear of muscles as you age, or they may result from injury, surgery, or a congenital condition. Although most hernias are not initially serious, they can become more problematic as time goes on. A hernia is serious when it becomes trapped in the opening it has pushed through, causing discomfort. In severe cases, this can result in the tissue losing its blood supply and becoming necrotic. Since hernias tend to worsen with time, surgical intervention and repair is often necessary.
